| Sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and Leadership and the International Center, Intercultural Leadership Seminar is an interactive 5-day program intended to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how to work more effectively in intercultural settings. The seminar design deliberately addresses attitudes, awareness, knowledge and skills as central aspects to developing intercultural competence. Because ILS attracts those who are concerned with cross-cultural issues, this scholarship allows participants to have the unique opportunity to engage in intensive dialog with others from diverse backgrounds who share the commitment to increasing their own intercultural competence. |

This educational experience takes place over the duration of Spring Break at Michigania Retreat & Conference Center. Alumni Association-owned since 1962, Michigania is located in northern Michigan (near Petoskey) on the shore of beautiful Walloon Lake. It is the home of Michigan alumni camping in the summer, and a variety of educational and recreational programs throughout the fall, winter, and spring. A special feature of all Michigania programs is the blending of education with recreation. All programs include U-M faculty-led forums and opportunities for free-flowing discussion and in-depth exploration of a wide range of topics. In addition, Michigania provides an ideal setting for conferences and retreats. With nearly 400 acres of woods and rolling meadows, Michigania provides a superb environment in which to learn and socialize. |

Testimonials
This is what some ILS alumni had to share about their experience:
I feel more confident and relaxed with people of different cultures now because of the diverse viewpoints I encountered at ILS. What surprised me the most wasn’t what I learned about other cultures but what I learned about myself. You can’t understand the world unless you understand yourself.
Especially after a few specific conversations, I was really interested to discover the difference in what Americans thought it meant to be American, and what people looking in at our culture thought it meant to be American.
As a newcomer to this country, I had plenty of questions around sensitive issues. ILS taught me how easy it can be to communicate with people from other cultures without being offensive. The most important thing I learned from ILS was that although people come from different backgrounds, we all have the ability to meet in common ground. |
